AGFA Dotrix is a subsidiary of AGFA Graphics and was a pioneer in the development of single pass UV inkjet printing technology. Its product debut was at DRUPA 2000 when the then Barco owned Dotrix demonstrated the prototype “the.factory”, a UV inkjet product co-developed with Cambridge Consulting. As part of AGFA Graphics, Dotrix continued to pioneer in the development of single pass UV inkjet with clear focus on achieving the highest quality print combined with a highly productive and versatile platform.
The project brief from AGFA Dotrix was to partner with them for the development of a high quality modular web transportation system for single pass UV inkjet printing on substrates ranging from 12-600 microns and 650mm in width.
• To design a modular system that would provide a seamless interface between digital and conventional printing technologies.
• To develop a highly accurate and stable web tension system required to overcome print artefacts commonly associated with web based inkjet printing.
• To integrate flexographic print, lamination, reverse print, foiling, rotary die cutting and variable length sheeting creating a truly hybrid technology.
• To provide packaging application know-how and manufacturing services.
Outcome: The development of a highly accurate multi-point web tension control system that ensured a sufficiently stable web was presented for inkjet printing in order to eliminate known print artefacts.
